Autev’s Mobile Robots May Allow Electric Vehicle Charging in Conventional Parking Spaces

Autev charging robots may provide a solution to the increasing demand for parking spaces equipped with EV chargers as the number of electric vehicles on roads continues to rise. Rather than creating additional EV-specific spots, parking garage operators can use Autev charging robots that can bring the charging station to the drivers’ vehicles.

The Autev robot, created by a Seattle-based startup, is essentially a large battery mounted on wheels. It operates autonomously and can be summoned to an electric vehicle (EV) by the user via an app. The EV can be parked in any spot in the garage, regardless of whether it is dedicated to EV charging.

After the Autev charging robot reaches the vehicle, the user can simply connect the charging cable to their EV’s charging port and leave it to charge while they go about their business. When the user returns, they can unplug the cable, and the robot will return to its charging station within the parking garage. In case the user needs to leave before the charging is complete, they can either adjust the desired charging capacity using the app or manually unplug the cable.

According to Autev CEO and co-founder Osama AlSalloum, the Autev robot can utilize DCFC fast charging technology and can charge up to six vehicles before requiring its own recharge.

By the first quarter of next year, it is anticipated that fleets of Autev charging robots will be commercially accessible to garage operators. These operators will pay a monthly fee and earn profits from customer charging fees and advertisements on the robots.
